Soldering opens the door to the world of Do-It-Yourself electronics, but it involves having a solid knowledge of safety measures and electrostatic discharge (ESD) warnings. With newcomers, care should be taken with the problem of heat hazards and the delicate electronic components so as to avoid initial unsafe projects.
Soldering Safety Essentials
Depending on the type of soldering iron used, the tip can become heated to a temperature of about 400 C, and it is extremely important to never allow the tip or heated part to touch your hand or flesh. Place a special iron stand in a specific place, and you always put the iron into the stand when you are not using it – never leave it on the work-table, even for a moment. Sanitation is important: wipe and dry down your table to prevent fire and electric shocks, and spilled fluids and mess will attract mishaps. Before work apply a small amount of the solder to the tip of the iron before applying the tin in order to conduct the heat and melt the solder. Do not solder live (powered) circuits – this is a severe shock hazard.
Whenever heating wire or components, use tweezers or clamps to hold these items and not your hands, so you do not burn yourself. It is important to keep the tip clean with a sponge or metal wool and the iron in the form of tin, so that it does not oxidize and the joints are smooth and uniform.
ESD Basics for Electronics
Sensitive components can be destroyed without making a sound due to electro static discharge (ESD). Solder at an adequately grounded ESD safe workstation with grounded mats and wrist straps. Wear gloves when touching grounded components to neutralize this electric charge before touching integrated circuits and semiconductors. Keep the humidity moderate to reduce the accumulation of statical electricity; climates that are too dry are unhealthy.

Touch PCBs with the edges and never touch the components pins. Store boards and move them in antistatic bags, and reduce activities that can cause friction to create statical activity such as rubbing feet or clothing on the carpet.
